Imagine your frame dissected into a tic-tac-toe board. Put the faces of the subjects on intersecting lines. Two reasons: 1. It makes the photo more visually pleasing than centering the person like television. 2. In the case of this monitor lizard, currently a resident at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, his tail won't get chopped off.
